Limited distance rides of 25 to 35 miles are great for less experienced horses, riders new to endurance riding, or riders who desire to ride shorter distances for a variety of reasons.
Most of the same rules apply as in the longer distances, except LD competitions aren’t finished at the finish line, but when the horse reaches pulse criteria (usually 60 bpm) within 30 minutes after completing the course. The equine must also pass a post-ride evaluation by the control judge. Placements and best condition are offered at nearly all AERC rides.
Regional and national mileage awards as well as regional best condition awards are given each year for limited distance. Weight divisions do not figure into LD competitions.
For AERC’s limited distance rides, equines must be 48 months of age. Limited distance rules begin with rule L1 in the AERC rule book. View the current rule book HERE.
Designed originally as training rides for the longer distances, LD is considered the distance of choice for many riders. Check out “Changing Attitude: LD = Luxury Distance” by Sky Evans for an interesting perspective on LD.
