President's Letter: Looking back on 2018 and looking forward to 2019

by Monica Chapman, AERC President

With 2018 in the books, it's a great time to review what you and your horse accomplished last year and to set your goals for 2019.

Everyone's personality is different and what is a life-changing accomplishment to one rider may be a frequent occurrence for another rider. The one thing to remember is every goal and accomplishment is important, no matter how big or small. What I want for AERC members is to accomplish your dreams no matter what they are. I've also learned that no matter how many plans you make, be prepared to revamp them numerous times in a year.

The one constant for me is the camaraderie with fellow AERC members. Since I work from home, the human interaction at AERC rides is a great plus. Talking to my dogs and horses all day long doesn't do a lot for the social aspects of life.

I am somewhat disappointed in my accomplishments for the 2018 ride season. I missed a number of close rides due to family obligations. In my quest to do a ride in every state I only added one state (Ohio). I sure had a blast doing it. I met a new friend, Patti Jo Duda. We rode all day together. My friend Mary and I had an exciting road trip back from Ohio through six hours of blowing snow.

Some of my goals for 2019 are to add two more states to my list of doing a ride in every state (hopefully California and Arizona). I'd like to go over the 8,000-mile mark for endurance miles. My horse goals with Rushcreek Atley are to get 1,000 miles in limited distance (he's three rides shy) and 2,000 endurance miles, and take him to the 50 mile National Championship in California.

My goal for my sweet boy GoZell is to get him happily going down the trail. We have had a bit of a rough start but I'm positive this will be a great year for us. I have so much fun riding him. He's a dream.

Please share your AERC goals on the AERC Facebook page. I hope to see you accomplish those goals in next year's AERC yearbook issue of Endurance News.
