The most famous -- or infamous-- climb in the OD is up the very steep rocky western face of the eastern ridge of the Massanuttens on a trail known as Sherman's Gap. This is the 80 mile point for the 100 milers, but only the front runners will see this trail during daylight -- most will only see it at dusk or by glowstick. The 75 milers also have this climb at their 55 mile point. It is the most difficult section of trail on the OD for both the steepness and the rocks. Photo by Flora Hillman
