How is your 100 mile conditioning program different from your 50 mile conditioning program?    More total miles worked during the week.

Describe your feeding program, before during and after a 100:   increase feed a few days before ride. After ride lots of small frequent feedings.

What kind (if any) supplements have you used -- do you think they made a difference?   Power Mix by Super Sup. It has made a difference.

How close to the 100 mile ride do you do your last conditioning ride? Last 50 mile ride?    7-10 days, for both 50 & 100's.

How do you prepare yourself for a 100 mile ride?  Over what period of time?   Just lots of riding, all the time. Eat a good meal the night before.

How do you know or feel that the time is right to do a 100 on your horse for the first time?   The horse lets me know.

How do you handle riding in the dark? Glowsticks on your tack or not? Headlamps, flashlights (describe).  Do you have a preference on color of glowstick?   No problem riding at night. Sometimes put glowsticks on breastcollar. No color preference. Hand held flashlight.

How do you and your horse feel at different points in the ride?  What are the "low" spots and how do you handle them?    Don't know of any low spots that I have. Depending on weather sometimes my horse will hit a low spot. Then I just ease the horse through it.

Is your post ride horse care any different than a 50 mile ride?   No

Any advice to first time 100 mile riders on post ride rider-recovery?   For both rider and horse. Eat. Give the horse its first feeding of grain within the hour of finishing. You need to get those carbs replaced.

What kinds of food and drink do you like on a 100?   I carry a mixture of Emergen C & Carb Pro and sip on it throughout the ride. No special food, just make sure I have a variety to pick from. Drink Ensure halfway through the ride.

What are your recommendations for someone attempting their first 100 miler?   Just take a loop at a time, and make sure you eat and drink, even when you are not hungry or thirsty.

How often do you electrolyte on a 100 mile ride? How about pre-ride or post-ride electrolyting?    How often during the ride depends on the weather and horse. Electrolyte the night before and morning of ride. Give dose after ride sometimes.

How many 50 mile rides would you do on a horse prior to doing his first 100 miler? Over what period of time?    No set number, when the horse is ready I move them up. What is your most memorable experience on a 100 miler? Finishing the Tevis.

What is the funniest thing that has happened to you on a 100?    I guess when the person riding with me started hallucinating and thought I was a sack of potatoes or was it the first hundred when about 70 miles we got off to walk and almost fell down, our legs were like rubber.

What is your favorite 100 mile ride and why?   Don't have a favorite, I like variety.

What do you look for in a good 100 mile horse?    Eats and drinks

How old do you think a horse should be when it does its first one day 100?   six

What do you think is the biggest mistake that you've made on a 100?    Getting caught up in the competition.

What do you think is the biggest mistake that most riders make on a 100?   Not knowing how to pace and getting caught up in the competition.

What traits do you posses that make you a successful 100 mile rider?   Persistence and I just enjoy the hundreds.

What traits does your horse posses that makes him/her a successful 100 mile horse?    Stamina, eats, drinks, rests at checks.

What lesson have you learned the hard way, on a 100 mile ride?   Don't get caught up in the competition.

How many 100's a year do you think is doable for the average horse and rider team?
If they are riding to complete?   6-7
If they are riding competitively?   5-6

How much time off following a 100 mile ride do you recommend?
If they are riding to complete?    Depends on the horse and the ride. Last year one of my horse's did a hundred one weekend and turned around and did a 50 the following week. Never showed any sign of tiredness and legs were fine. This is not something I would recommend, you really need to know your horse to do this.
If they are riding competitively?   Again, depends on the horse and terrain. I don't have any set rule. Each horse is different.
